Music at Sacred Heart is a busy and exciting department, with a vibrant curriculum and extensive extra-curricular provision. All pupils study music from age 11 until age 14, and at this point they choose whether to continue the subject. We currently offer both BTEC First Certificate and GCSE Music to pupils aged 14 to 16.
We have one, large, well-equipped classroom with a suite of 20 IMac Computers and midi keyboards. We are extremely well resourced with instruments: we are lucky to have a full class set of Samba instruments and Djembes. Alongside this we have 4 practice rooms with keyboards, electric guitars and drum kits for instrumental teaching and private practice which is highly encouraged.
Many pupils in our school take part in small group or individual music lessons on top of their lessons during curriculum time. These are heavily subsidised by the school, lasting for 25 minutes once a week rotating through the timetable. All pupils are eligible for instrumental lessons, and can apply to study any of the following instruments: piano, keyboard, violin, ‘cello, drum kit, electric guitar, bass guitar, clarinet, flute, recorder, alto saxophone, tenor saxophone and vocal tuition. Once they have been selected there are very high expectations of their progress and they are expected to work towards examinations in their instrument and take part in school ensembles and performances.
Ensembles/Extra curricular activities include:
- School Band
- School Production (Musical Theatre)
- School Choir
- Guitar Club
- Violin Club
- Key board Club (Yr 7)
- Percussion Club
School Productions
The school production takes place annually in March - in recent years we have produced the following productions to great acclaim:
- Grease (2007)
- Bugsy Malone (2008)
- Blues Brothers (2009)
Auditions take place in the summer term prior to the show, and rehearsals begin in September every week until the show date itself. The production is open to all pupils in Year 8, 9 and 10; Blues Brothers involved over 80 pupils throughout the school both on stage, in the band, backstage and front of house. This year’s production is 'Little Shop of Horrors'
