Welcome to the Mathematics Department
The Mathematics Department is made up of 11 experienced and committed teachers.
The Mathematics Department has a suite of 6 well equipped rooms. Each room has an interactive whiteboard and the Mathematics Teachers utilise an extensive range of software to facilitate the learning of our pupils.
We have very high expectations of our pupils in terms of both behaviour and achievement and we believe this is fundamental to our examination success. (Please see our KS3 and GCSE bar charts.)
Pupils are taught mathematics in sets by ability. This is proven to enable every pupil to maximise their own personal potential. A new topic is taught roughly every 2 to 3 weeks and at the end of all topics the pupils are tested and awarded both a percentage and a National Curriculum level. From these test results, the teachers can move a child to a different set either up if the child has done exceptionally well but also down if the child is struggling.
Mathematics is a skill subject and we believe it is essential for pupils to practise the skills learnt in lessons and the best way of doing this is homework. It is for this reason that we generally set homework every lesson to be completed by the next lesson. If for any reason a child has any difficulty in completing any part of a mathematics homework they must come to school early at 8am were they can see any of the teachers in the Mathematics Department who will be pleased to help them.
Every pupil in every year group is given a text book. The text book for pupils in years 7, 8 and 9 is to be kept at home for the purposes of completing homework. The textbook does not have to be brought to school as we have class sets in every classroom.
Equipment is a necessary part of the learning of mathematics and therefore should be brought to all lessons. Essential equipment is the following: black pen, red pen, pencil, sharpener, 30cm ruler, protractor, compass and scientific calculator. All of these can be purchased at school.
