Gifted and Talented

Gifted and Talented

Gifted and Talented pupils, those who have been identified by teachers as having academic, sporting, musical, artistic or dramatic abilities significantly above average, are challenged and stretched in Sacred Heart School.

Among the extra academic opportunities offered to the most gifted pupils are AS Level Maths and English and GCSE Astronomy.

Pupils also benefit from a target-setting and mentoring scheme system which operates within school and an extensive range of extra-curricular activities after school and during the holidays.

Among the activities Gifted and Talented pupils participated in during the last academic year were a residential revision weekend, courses in Philosophy, Japanese, HTML programming and Arts Award in Film-making.

In 2006, we gained the NACE Challenge Award, which recognises our excellence in meeting the needs of Gifted and Talented. We were the first Inner London School to achieve this award and only the 25th school in the country.

In 2007-08 the amount of A and A* grades gained by Year 11 pupils was a record-breaking 243, our best ever. On average each pupil leaves our school with nearly 3 A-A* grades and 20% of pupils leave with at least 5 grades of A-A*.

The school's overall results in 2009 were significantly higher than in 2008. 93% of pupils achieved 5 A*-C grades (compared to 79% in 2008) while 82% of pupils achieved 5 A*-C grades including English and Maths (up from 70% in 2008). Both these figures were once again the highest in the borough of Southwark and well in excess of national averages.

It was at the ‘top end' that 2009 was a record-breaking year for Sacred Heart school, with a new record set for the number of A and A* grades, 295 in total, up from 240.5 last year (77 A* and 218 A grades). 6% of all GCSE's taken at Sacred Heart were A*, 26% were A*-A. Of all the pupils at Sacred Heart 63% got at least one A*- A grades.
