Welcome to Citizenship
Citizenship Education:
"Citizenship equips pupils with the knowledge and skills needed for effective and democratic participation. It helps pupils to become informed, critical, active citizens who have the confidence and conviction to work collaboratively, take action and try to make a difference in their communities and the wider world." National Curriculum, 2007
Citizenship always attempts to incorporate the "Every child matters", Government initiative.
The Government's aim is for every child, whatever their background or their circumstances, to have the support they need to:
- Be healthy
- Stay safe
- Enjoy and achieve
- Make a positive contribution
- Achieve economic well-being
Citizenship Education has been a statutory subject for both key stage 3 and key stage 4 since 2002. The expectation is that Citizenship Education should be recording achievement along with all other foundation subjects in the national curriculum; in order for this to be achieved, at Sacred Heart, all pupils will be entered for the GCSE Short Course in Citizenship at the end of Year 9 with the possibility, particularly for higher end pupils, to be entered for the full GCSE award.
