Resistant Materials
Resistant Materials in Design and Technology. (Key Stage Three)
In the resistant materials department there is a strong emphasis on practical and skills based work. Pupils in year seven are taught the fundamentals of making using a full range of materials. This includes basic tool making, carpentry and working with plastics. In year eight the pupils apply their knowledge of materials to the design and manufacture of a mechanical toy; developing knowledge and understanding of levers, linkages and control systems. In year nine they design and make products, for chosen markets, using materials and processes to further develop their abilities, skills, knowledge and understanding.
Resistant Materials in Design and Technology. (Key Stage Four)
At Key Stage Four the emphasis on practical work and skills based learning continues. The pupils take a two year BTEC in Construction. This is a practical course and is equivalent to two GCSE s. The course comprises an introduction to sustainable development, a unit on health, safety and welfare in the construction industry as well as an introduction to carpentry and joinery.
