Our Curriculum

Learning at Sacred Heart is interactive, engaging and relevant to the real world. Our pupils have a strong grounding in traditional core academic subjects (English, Maths, Science and RE) from Year 7 onwards, providing a positive platform for achievement in other areas. They learn how to prepare, organise and motivate themselves for work each day, and we support them at every stage of their school career. We want them to be excited by their learning, to recognise its importance and to be proud of their achievements in every discipline.

Our curriculum is wide ranging and proactive, designed to meet the needs of everyone’s abilities, interests and aspirations for the future. Our pupils learn to think for themselves and we encourage them to become independent learners who ask good questions, think creatively, and solve problems with confidence. By the time our pupils leave school, we want them to be self-disciplined and focused young people who are totally determined to succeed in whatever career they choose to pursue.

We annually review and update our curriculum in order to maintain the highest possible academic standards and to prevent our pupils from being disadvantaged, thus ensuring that every pupil reaches their full potential. To this end we have been proactive in ensuring that our pupils who are able to access the new EBAC (English Baccalaurate) accreditation at GCSE are able to do so, and we are already prepared for the challenge of new GCSE qualifications which begin in 2015. In addition the curriculum in the Sixth Form – with its broad range of academic A Levels – is designed to maximise our pupils’ chances of accessing the best universities.

Our superb academic record reflects Sacred Heart’s traditional and highly disciplined approach to education, and we are committed to even greater success in future years. We set our pupils challenging targets for continual improvement and we make sure that they make the most of their opportunities in each year. We expect total support and commitment from parents, and work in close partnership with them to ensure that all our young people find the success they deserve.

Our teachers work hard to find new ways to make their subjects more exciting while relevant field trips and study visits take lessons out of the classroom at every opportunity across the whole curriculum. Wide ranging extra-curricular activities also provide new ways to learn and have fun. This includes the Duke of Edinburgh Award Scheme up to Gold standard.

In recognition of our long-standing academic success, we are a Department of Education designated dual specialism school in Mathematics and Computing and Languages. This has been made possible by superb teaching and extraordinary results. We continue to invest in state-of-the-art facilities and our most important resource, our teachers.
